Cambrian Mountains Wind Turbine Protest Rally
Filed under: Wind Farms | Tags: Nant-y-Moch, trail riding, Wind Farms
On Sunday Mar 6th over 250 people gathered at proposed Nant y Moch windfarm site to show their oppostion to plans to cover this wild and wonderful area with 88 giant wind turbines. There were no NIMBYs. No one lives here. It is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe. Protesters had come from as far afield as London and Yorkshire.
The rally was addressed by Jim Perrin, mountaineer and travel writer. who has lung cancer. FreeRein horses Morgan and Poppy carried Jim to the summit from where he gave an informative and impassioned address. Much of what he said was of course well known to protesters – the inability of wind power to replace fossil fuels, its vast cost, its impact on fuel poverty. None of which is disputed by the wind industry. He also mentioned that the beneficaries included David Camerons father-in-law who draws vast sums from the turbines on his land and Nick Clegg’s wife who is a director of a Spanish company which manufactures turbines.
But the real tragedgy of wind turbines is not that they destroy scenery & impoverish the poor. It is this. The £ multi-billions used on them could be spent on developing a source of power which could replace fossil fuels and even nuclear power. Both of these are currently indispensible to a modern industrialised world.
Riders springing into the saddle create spring in FreeRein bookings
Filed under: News | Tags: horse riding holiday, riding holidays, trail riding
An air of expection and excitement is abroad among the horses this spring. There are going to be lots of trips into the hills visiting all our favourite farms and inns. Of late there has been too many times when there has been little to do except stand around the feeding rings gossiping and grumbling – even feelings of animosity towards those who are getting the most trips out. Rumours of compulsory redundancies regularly spread from the office into the fields.
So there were great celebrations when we learned that the bookings for April were double those for last year and three times the year before.
Many of us have been fitted with brand new saddles – and there is a new(ish) Equibus to carry us about. We are all a bit puzzled by how this has come about. Maybe its because there have been no increase in prices for the last 2 years – or perhaps our fellow workers at the airports have helped us with strike threats. Or it could be that – as a result of full page articles in the Times, The Guardian, Observer, Independent and the Telegraph – there is an increasing realisation that us FreeRein Horses, combined with the Great Cambrian Horse Trail Network, really do offer a very special and unique service for horse riders.
FreeRein’s 21st Season 2011
Filed under: News | Tags: riding holiday, riding holidays, trail riding
The happy herd are back from their winter rest, all brushed up, saddles fitted, (some with slightly longer girths than the end last season after a nice few months of grass) & eager to get back out into the hills. Why not come & join us for the first guided ride of the season 8th-10th April 2011. The guided Silver John Trail is 3 full days of riding (lots of nice grassy hill tracks for trotting & cantering) in a sociable group (maximum 8 riders), staying at Inns overnight before returning to FreeRein HQ for tea, homemade cake & a reflective look at the maps.
